Thousands of retired thoroughbreds each year are sold at auction to kill buyers who are commissioned by horsemeat processing plants that sell horse flesh to be eaten in Europe and Asia.
Now, thanks to Virtual Horse Adoption, anyone can help rescue one of these loveable, kind and gorgeous thoroughbreds by becoming a sponsor.
Virtual Horse Adoption allows sponsors to adopt a horse for a week or more.
It costs roughly $12 a day to care for a horse, or an average of $375 per month per horse. By paying for a horse’s upkeep for a specified time, the participant can pick any horse to sponsor until he or she finds their loving forever home.
Persons who are unable to virtually adopt a horse can always make a donation to be spent on a specific horse!
“Suppose you would like to give Daisy some carrots, but are several hours away,” explains Deibel.
“You can send a donation and we will purchase a bag of carrots for your horse and send you pictures of her receiving the carrots.”
The Virtual Adopter will have their name and state placed under their horse's picture on the website. Once the horse has been adopted permanently the Virtual Adopter will continue to get regular updates on their progress and updated, new pictures!
